As some of you may remember, I wrote about us NOT having pet insurance back in May…and how our vet bill was almost $1,000 for our cat. (Yep, that’s him pictured to the left) Well after that whole fiasco I looked into getting pet insurance and go figure…for a cat that old you can only get “accident” insurance and since my cat doesn’t drive much or get himself into any other situations where an accident might happen, I am guessing we won’t be getting it. Separate from that issue though is that the cat got real sick again about a week ago and started throwing up all over the house…the couch, the chairs, our bed…it was pretty bad. So back to the vet we went again.
This time the bill was almost $300 for a quick look over, an IV of some magical fluid and 2 bottles of take home medicine. He is all better now, but the grand total so far in the last 30 days is now about $1,300. The lesson I can teach any of you is that if you have a young animal, you might want to consider pet insurance. I think we will get it next time we have a young animal in the house. Even though he has barely cost me anything over the years, this last month has really hurt. But like I said last time, I would have paid whatever they asked. Unless of course it was the same amount of a down payment on a house or something…

I’m sorry your furbaby has been ill. I looked into getting insurance for our 2 dogs when we got each of them but because they’re royalty they live in the house. They think they own a queen size bed to sleep in if that gives you any indication of how they’re treated. But I digress. Instead of giving someone money I may never need to use, and because both my animals are of a breed that need regular twice-yearly dental work, I opened a sinking fund account with ING and just automatically deposit bi-monthly into that account equal to what the monthly insurance premiums would have been.
Good idea Terri…I will have to look into doing that…God knows I need yet another account!
I’m also sorry your cat is sick…..
You have my sympathy, and I hope your kitty
makes a quick and full recovery.
Thanks Harm, appreciate the thoughts!
never really thought about this before, Thanks for good info - will check this out in our area.
Good luck Roger and hope it helps!
I’ve been pondering it. My dog is elderly and has cancer of the spleen, though. I figure they would start me on a high premium. It’s a good idea to think ahead on things like this.
