I eat mostly raw foods here in the southwest. I don't eat meat, but eating raw can be expensive, as there are no farmer's markets here. When I lived in the midwest and had access to a great farmer's market I could spend a lot less money on my raw diet.

The range doesn't surprise me that much; places like New York for fresh foods would be more expensive than say Columbus Ohio. Also the types of food you eat too makes a huge impact (frugal or not). I know my wife and I are at the upper end of your list, but we also don't plan in advance - we buy food daily for our immediate needs rather than waste it.

I'd like to know how those 2 people spend only $25 a week. I'm frugal and average $70 per week.

It takes a lot of effort and organization to manage to eat on $25/week but here's how I would do it:

1. Plan weekly menus around grocery store sales.
2. Minimize the amount of meat you serve.
3. Shop at several different stores to get the best deals at each one.
4. Rely on inexpensive staples like potatoes, eggs, and beans.
5. Make as much as possible from scratch.

I've put more details in a post on my own blog - didn't want to take up too much space here!
