What is really healthy is whole grain bread. If you were to recreate this sandwich and use white bread this would not be healthy. White bread has a higher glycemic index than a spoonful of table sugar. That means it raises your blood sugar faster than table sugar and will leave you craving carbs faster. Better suggestions for bread would be sourdough or pita.
The natural peanut butter is healthy better. Again, though if you were to use the supermarket peanut butter there would be saturated fats and sugar added. These are bad things because again, it raises your blood sugar fast meaning you'll be craving later.
Jelly, is like eating sugar from the bowl. Enough said.
For people who want to be heart healthy and lose weight eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich should only be eaten as a special treat.

Whole wheat bread – is a marketing gimic. Take either canned or fresh pumpkin, and either open the can or clean, rind, and roast it in your oven for an hour or two at 350 until the pumpkin is soft and reasonably appealing and golden brown.
mash your pumpkin into a large pot, along with a little apple juice, a little sugar/molasses/cane juice/brown sugar/whatever, some pumpkin pie spices, a healthy pinch of salt, and a splash of cider vinegar. mix it all up and gently simmer the hell out of it until it's gone very dark and thick and your house smells like a pickled pumpkin pie.
@ David: I can't think of a less-rude way of doing this than linking, but this:

rice and chicken and spices and all, is cheaper than your PBJ, and also better for you.

@ Debbie: Pumpkin Butter

Take either canned or fresh pumpkin, and either open the can or clean, rind, and roast it in your oven for an hour or two at 350 until the pumpkin is soft and reasonably appealing and golden brown.

mash your pumpkin into a large pot, along with a little apple juice, a little sugar/molasses/cane juice/brown sugar/whatever, some pumpkin pie spices, a healthy pinch of salt, and a splash of cider vinegar. mix it all up and gently simmer the hell out of it until it’s gone very dark and thick and your house smells like a pickled pumpkin pie.

@ David: I can’t think of a less-rude way of doing this than linking, but this:

<a

Funny thing is that I actually like them and I haven't gotten tired of them yet! I'm estimating that I save approximately $6/day or $120/month which makes the $40 bottles of wine that I occasionally buy at dinner a little easier to swallow :)

Too funny – I got this brilliant idea almost a month ago and have eaten nothing but peanut butter and jelly sandwiches since. Add sliced fruit (bananas are popular) or crunchy cereal in the middle for a different texture. Another variation is to spread the nut butter and jelly on a tortilla and roll it up. Hmm, I think I just might be doing this myself tomorrow!

Try mixing it up so you don’t bored – different types of bread, nut butters and jam/jelly. I like how you show that even with fancy-schmancy ingredients, it's still very inexpensive.
I like pumpkin butter because it has lots of vitamin A in it (and is also delicious). It's not that easy to find, though, and I haven't learned to make it yet.
My mom used to use substitute lots of things for the jelly part of this sandwich, most of which will probably sound just as disgusting as jelly does to devil: honey, brown sugar, imitation bacon bits, cheese.
To make this into a whole lunch for a grown-up, you should add some produce (fruit, celery, or carrots or something).

It’s even cheaper with cheapo white bread or bread from a day-old baker, a cheap giant container of peanut butter (unless you’ll let it go bad) and a large container of grape jelly (keep this in the fridge).

I like how you show that even with fancy-schmancy ingredients, it’s still very inexpensive.

I like pumpkin butter because it has lots of vitamin A in it (and is also delicious). Why ruin a perfectly good peanut butter sandwich or a perfectly good jelly sandwich? Not that a jelly sandwich would be healthy or satisfying anyway.
Eating the exact same thing every day is a crashing bore. Personally, I would need some variety.

Bringing lunch from home is a great idea.
