My Rent Goes Up 2.3% Tomorrow Thanks To Rent Control.

Posted by david | August 31, 2007

OK I am going to let you in on something I don’t normally share with anyone…how much I pay for rent. The reason I don’t share it is because no one can believe that rent can really cost that much (outside of CA or NYC, at least). And believe me, I don’t like paying it either, but we do…and we made the sacrifices to be able to do so. Here goes:

$1949 per month

I don’t know if it seems like a lot to you, but it might depending on where you live. Sure, this is a mortgage payment in most other places in this country. A big mortgage payment at that. But here in Southern California, you cannot get a mortgage payment that low on anything other than a cardboard box in the ghetto on a 50 year interest only mortgage, never mind on a 2 bedroom 1,000 sq foot+ place 1 block from the ocean. If we were to move out of here and move right back in (without rent control in place anymore) we would be paying $2400 per month. I guess the moral of my story is thank you to the City for setting rent control rate hikes at 2.3%!

But then again, it’s also an inspiration to get out of here soon and move somewhere more affordable and reasonable…like Taos, NM, which we are hoping to move to the beginning of 2008.

We are actually neighbors! I know rent and housing prices here are crazy but that is part of the motivation to make more money!

    Or to move! :-)

I live in an older style 2 bedroom apartment in Sydney Australia, and my rent works out to be $1235 a month. Your amount to live by the beach seems quite reasonable in relative terms. You’d certainly pay more than that to live in say Bondi.

I guess it’s all about lifestyle choices and what’s important to you. Not to mention you do have to live somewhere, so why not have it as nice as you choose to have it!

Were you born in South Cal or moved in?

Unless it is #1 and relatives/friends are holding you back, I would say run!

Moved here in 1995. We are working on getting out, hopefully Jan/Feb is our move date!
