How Packaging A Vacation Can Save You A Ton Of Money.

I recently wrote about how we booked our trip to Mexico through Expedia, and they offered me the option to pay in two installments; one when I booked and 1 in a month. That was certainly a selling point, but also by booking our entire package through them instead of buying everything separate, we saved a healthy hunk of change. Just how much?

By booking the entire package through Expedia, we are paying $1,450 for the entire trip. That includes airfare for 2, transportation in Mexico to the hotel, and the all-inclusive hotel from Wednesday – Sunday. This includes taxes and tips, so it is quite a deal.

If I were to book all these separately, the airfare alone would have cost me $1,100. Transportation to the hotel is about $60. The hotel by itself is $150 per night, for a total of $600. Grand total for booking separately? $1,760, a savings of $300.

So even though some people are afraid of booking package deals, if you do it through a reputable company and travel on reputable airlines, you can save quite a bit of cash. Imagine if our trip was to Europe, I probably would have saved a lot more!

Cruises are even cheaper when booked as a package.

Package deals are good price wise but if you’re the adventurous sort and want to move around or you’re not going to take advantage of the package then it looses its value.

I’ve taken trips where I saved money by not taking a package – though I’d have to say this is probably the exception to the rule.

I like the option of paying for the trip in installments – did they charge any interest on this feature?

No, they didn’t Matt. They just charged half when I booked and they will charge the other half in 30 days. It’s pretty cool.

I’ve saved money booking through agencies. I used gotoday.com for our trip to Italy and, for two people, airfare, and hotel for seven days, we paid around $1500, which included a day trip to Pompeii. It was several years ago, but I believe the airfare was around $500.

Recently, we saved big time by booking a Disney trip through Small World Vacations, Inc., DWVacations.com. I compared online and they got us a better hotel and still saved us about $500. I even used the other tricks – one of which was to use Small World Vacations – in the Unofficial Guide to Disney World in an effort to get the best price!
