Forecasting How High Or Low Air Travel Prices Will Go.

Posted by david | October 18, 2007

Since we live thousands of miles away from our families, we always have to travel during the holidays. And as much as I wish I could drive or take the train instead of flying (I hate flying), we just don’t have that kind of time. I mean, taking Amtrak just to Chicago would take 41 hours…almost 2 whole days sitting in econo-class seating. Yikes! So for the last couple of weeks I have been looking for plane tickets to Chicago for Christmas, as this year we are going to my wife’s family. (We alternate years to make it fair) The last time I looked at the dates that we want, the tickets were over $550 each…not really in the budget at this point and too much to pay if you ask me. For that price, I can almost cover my entire vacation/wedding attendance in Mexico next month. I have turned my attention to a website called Farecast, which can tell you whether you should buy your tickets today or if the prices are set to go down in the near future. I don’t know how they do it, but for 2 days now they keep telling me to wait because they are saying that there is an 80% chance that the tickets I want should go down soon.

I have tried Expedia, Travelocity, Cheap Tickets, Priceline, and all the other services, but this is the only one that gives you a best estimate if the prices are going to change in the near future. It’s pretty cool, really…they must be some kind of fortune tellers over there. :-) But I am going to take them at their word and keep checking back every day and hope they are right. Otherwise, I will be spending upwards of $1,000 to go to Chicago for Christmas!

So if you have been wondering if the tickets you want might be lower a little later, you might want to check them out.
