It was certainly the frugal way to go. My best friend is visiting me from there for New Years week, and he will do the same. You get to talk to interesting strangers. You will love it. Admittedly my trip was half as long as yours, and I was doing it in a coach seat. The biggest problem is that there are stretches where Amtrak is as fast or faster than driving (Indiana to Cleveland), then there are stretches when its half as fast as driving (Pittsburg to DC).
