I have to say, as someone who works way too much, I was really happy to receive a Wii for Christmas (though I didn't ask for one). Now when I'm overworked or stressed out, I can just play a shooting game until I feel better. For me, I find that it's a better distraction than, say, reading a book, where I could easily let my mind wander back to whatever was stressing me out. And I have to think that the incredible reaction time required by some games (like Guitar Hero) is good for keeping my reflexes sharp. I have always thought that some of the skills required to be good at video games carry over nicely to real life. And yeah, my shoulders were sore after the first few days of playing tennis!

I never understood the hype about the Wii (or any other video game for that matter) till some friends broke down and bought one for the kids. We were visiting today when they fired it up and we had a blast. It's a great way to burn off all those Christmas calories. I liked it enough to offer to buy extra controllers for the family (no way they can afford it). I had a blast, unlike the usual games Wii is really a group activity. I really had a good time. I won't buy one myself as I'd never use it but gladly pick up some extra controllers for them as we visit regularly.

I agree with the other comments about it being better to get outside and play the actual sport. That said for many ADULTS it's hard to find time to get a bunch of friends together and have the weather cooperate well enough to go outside. I think the Wii could fill the niche very nicely especially once they get their online capability up to snuff.

I'm with Brip Blap - I've never understood the attraction of playing "sports" video games. Golden Tee, Wii - they just aren't the real thing.

For me video games are a way to play something that I can't physically do - like battle aliens from outer space or evil warlocks or whatever.

Brip Blap - no one says you should stay inside and only play the game! :-) I play tennis twice a week outside...but still, the games on the Wii were pretty fun.

That all being said, if you kid is going to have a video game, I would rather they have this one than some others because at least you move a little. But nothing beats going outside to play.

And you are right, it is not a workout - it's a game! I get tired of that comment as well. :-)

I shake my head over and over whenever someone says how the Wii is a great workout with its baseball or bowling or tennis or whatever simulations. What about actually PLAYING baseball instead of a $600 simulation of it? It is an anti-wealth device. Period!

Sorry to grumble. Sam's point drove me nuts. Do you need another device to watch TV from? Isn't having a computer that plays Hulu or YouTube enough? Where is it going to end? When Nintendo implants chips in our heads so we never have to turn off the beautiful artificial world?

*grumble*
