Giving Away Our Stuff - Freecycle Is The Greatest Website Ever.

In preparing for our move, we are doing our normal “how in the world do 2 people acquire this much stuff?” dance, and we are clearing out our neglected closets and cabinets in order to pare down our belongings. For someone with OCD like myself (not diagnosed, mind you, just claimed), I don’t know how we end up with this much stuff. I hate clutter and mess - but yet my closets are packed with stuff we have not used in oh, at least a year. And because I don’t want to deal with the headache of trying to sell this stuff, I went ahead and listed a bunch of it on freecycle.org last night…and proceeded to receive hundreds of emails for it all! So later on today, I have a bunch of people coming to the house to pick up their free bounty, some of which includes:

One Sharper Image Ionic Breeze
45 Issues of Dwell Magazine, dating back from 2002 (why oh why save magazines?)
25 empty DVD cases
Multiple bags of old teaching supplies that my wife no longer needs
A couple of blank canvases from my failed art project that never happened

Giving this stuff away helps me in several ways - I don’t have to sell or haggle with anyone, I can get rid of it immediately, and I don’t have to pay to have it moved. I got the final estimate (and signed the papers, yea!) for the movers, and we are good to go at the end of the month. (More on that later) So now I gotta cut some of the fat from our estimated weight to see if we can save any money on this. Anyone need a like-new TV, a brand new sofa, a 14 year old cat or all the food in my pantry? ;-)

  1. I am a huge fan of freecycle. I am glad it’s helping you unload stuff!!

  2. Sure, I will take the cat.

  3. I LOVE Freecycle! Just this afternoon I had a full size box spring and bed frame picked up as a result of responding to a post from our local freecycle group. Who wants just a box spring?? That’s the great thing about freecycle…there’s always someone who wants something for free, and they’re willing to pick it up!

  4. I’m moving at the end of the summer, and I think I will also have to use freecyle. I just hope that I have people come and take my crap!

  5. FreeCycle is great! I have been on both sides of the coin with freecycle and it’s win/win. One great thing that I noticed is that if you live in a cooler climate like we do, you can get a ton of already split wood for your fireplace.

  6. @Ralph - Oh really? I gotta keep that in mind for Taos!
