I dont have Comcast, thankfully. But I know I move close to that each and every month as I send and download videos (some even HD) for my clients.

This really isn't that big a deal, we've always had data caps here in Australia and our limits don't even come close to 250GB (well there is one ISP offering 250GB, but most of the data is only available off peak). I think you would be surprised at how much data the average consumer uses, it's nothing near that amount. This is simply to reign in the hard core peer-to-peer abusers.

In your case, can you check your monthly usage online somewhere, or does it appear on your bill? Due to the nature of your business, do they have a small business plan you could switch to that would have the data you need each month if it exceeds 250GB?

[...] My Two Dollars explains that those wonderful citizens over at Comcast are going to start limiting internet access for bandwidth hogs: e.g. kids who download lots of songs. Is your kid going to get you cut off? [...]

I can't say for sure that I would ever use 250 GB/month, but I'm happy to report that I don't have to worry about it now that I have Comcast!

In my old area, if I didn't have Comcast internet then I would have to have dial-up...UGH!

This is the main reason I'm sticking with DSL for now. It may not be as fast as cable internet, but to my knowledge there are no plans to cap DSL usage. I'm sure I've never come close to 250 GB in a month, but I doubt this will be the last restriction introduced by the cable companies.

Luckily, I chose a Qwest DSL line instead of Comcast cable internet when we moved here, so glad I did now!

shadox' idea could work for iTune-type services. You'd set a timer to start in the off hours. And Comcast would turn off the meters from say, 11PM-6AM.
OTOH, this doesn't help David, who has a legitimate need during working hours.

My gut says Comcast is assuming that most of the bandwidth hogs (the top .1%) are downloading illegal items.

Shadox, I think you are on to something there, and I think that would be a much better plan...

Here's the thing. I am of two minds about this. On the one hand, this seems like a throwback to the days of dial-up internet service... pay by the hour anyone? On the other hand, in my work I interact a lot of ISPs and I undertsand their business model very well. High intensity users like that can really throw a company's business model out the window. They are in business to make money afterall...

The probelm I think is their response / solution. I think that the proper answer should be to throttle back the speed of the heaviest users during peak hours, but allow them free rein during off-peak times when there is plenty of excess network capacity.

Unfortunately, 1. folks at Comcast don't seem to be particularly bright that way; 2. there are many other ISPs that will follow in their footsteps, and I know this for a fact...
