I am in the habit of unplugging things for safety reasons, but the electric savings does make a lot of sense.

There are simple electrical systems that can be installed to mimic Laura's actions of flipping off her power strip, but does this for the entire house by flipping one switch.

It works via a basic master switch, which controls various slave outlets through the home via wireless control to eliminate residual power usage. Just plug in all your cords like normal, through the slave outlets which regulate power from the wall outlets... and you're good to go. Saves around 30% to 50%.

Good story David and congrats Laura!

Good grief! That is inspiring! Cut her bill by two thirds!

I'm replacing all our can lights with CFL's and still have 29 left to go...ugh. At $5/each, it ain't cheap. I've already replaced every lamp in the house and I'm planning to buy a few more power strips. But for a 2,800 sq ft home with three kids running in and out and living in the sultry South, our current power/water bill is $150. Not bad, but I would prefer to pay $50! :D

I wish 45 was freezing for us instead of 10 or 0! We don't have or need AC here, but we need some heat, both from gas "wood"stove and our fireplaces.
