I am actually reducing my 401K contributions! If the market is going down further 401K investing is not a good idea, despite tax and compounding benefits. I did some back of the envelope calulations (and wrote about it) and for a person earning $100,000 - you could be atleast a $1000 better off by reducing your 401K contribution. Money market funds or just plain ol’ cash are a better idea right now!

If you are not going to be using your 401k soon for retirement, I would say rather than put lump sum money in right now as you may catch a falling knife rather than the market bottom one should increase their periodic contributions to benefit from dollar cost averaging.

Man I just checked my 401k today, when I heard coworkers grumbling about it all. I thought I was soooooo slick sliding my target retirement down from 2045 to 2010 so it had the most conservative investment mix instead of the most reckless. Still dropped like 12% in the last five weeks. Guess you can't dodge it, all you can do is lessen the blow.

I'm in a similar situation as you. It is a tough pill to swallow when your 401k loses $40k in a year. I actually recently increased my contribution percentage to take advantage that stocks are on sale, as I sometimes like to say.
