You can have your opinion, but I choose not to dwell on whether the number is off or not by a little bit. People live in poverty, the act by all of us was a positive thing if only to get people to think about poverty. Arguing about it defeats the purpose.

@david: yes, but when you use misleading figures, that is rather disingenuous, too. Why shouldn't it be about how you define or the number of poor, or why shouldn't it be about how you raise money when, "Our aim is to raise awareness and trigger a global discussion, and this year’s issue is POVERTY." I think discussion on how to spend or how to act is very germane, because throwing money at "poverty" or a purely monetary aspect does not reduce, has not reduced, or end poverty. Every blog action day blog I've seen talks only about raising money. There is a ton of money out there to "end poverty" already and you would figure with all that money, poverty would have ended centuries ago; however, throwing money at the problem has never resolved the problem, so, sorry, someone should be critical of the monetary aspect. You want to be positive about change, then start looking at ways of doing things better rather than just raising money.

However you add up the numbers, too many people are living in poverty. Blog Action Day was an even by almost 10,000 of us bloggers to raise awareness and money - it's not really the time to be negative about the number of poor or how we are raising money. It was meant to be a positive thing about making change.

those stats don't omit students, so the number is lower. ok, so there are lots of folks below the "poverty line". not sure what that means, because there isn't abject poverty in the U.S.

with that said, it is admirable on awareness, unfortunately, i wish it wasn't all about money. throwing money at poverty does not solve the problem of poverty. i like things that empower people, rather than hand outs. so good for the microloans

i also wish that people would list other ways to help than by giving money. you can volunteer at a hospice or a food shelter or habitat for humanity, etc.

Kiva is a great choice for donation! Blog Action Day has really raised awareness to microloaning because I have seen several post about it and many commentors in praising the financing results as well. I work with Surivor Corp and wanted to share with readers a link to GuluWalk 2008. People from all over the world have the opportunity to participate in helping the children of N. Uganda have food and shelter. It is another one of the great causes out there. Come walk if it is in your city!
