Insurers, automakers and American subsidiaries of foreign banks all want the Treasury Department to cut them a piece of the largest government rescue in U.S. history.

The Treasury is considering requests from a variety of industries, but has not decided whether to expand the program, officials said Saturday.

Lobbying efforts are intensifying.

When do I get a lobbyist to ask for money for me to be able to pay off my wife’s student loans? Where are the lobbyists for the homeless starving on the streets, for the kids in the bad schools getting shot at every day, for the people barely making ends meet as they lose their jobs?
