I understand where you are coming from.

Although the label "the consumer" is not a new one by any means, and people have often expressed themselves and communicated through consumption, MASS consumption has spiralled over the 20th/21st century to the point of which the individual is often defined solely on their consumption as part of one mass group with little individuality.

I have to say, while you make your point very clear, it is overshadowed by the surrounding advertising. Consumption has overtaken society to the point where one is constantly bombarded with marketing techniques created following psychological research, to give the most efficient results.

You may be a person but, I'm sorry, you will never shake the label of consumer.

Point on!
I'm a person, not a consumer...
I very seldom buy anything that isn't a necessity and I'd rather be known as a person or even 'client' rather than 'consumer' which equates to my being nothing more than a dollar sign.

This:

"It’s no surprise our economy is the way it is - we have been on spending spree of unheard proportions..."

What bothers me most (I'm canadian, and it applies to both countries) is that neither governments or media communities are realizing that it's our own damn faults. Moreover, they aren't realizing that their solutions are part of the exact same system of thought that brought us here. Why do we even WANT to prop up a broken system?
