New Landline Phone TV Ads Are Cute, But Would You Change Back From VOIP?

Have you seen the new ads on television extolling the virtues of having a landline at home instead of VOIP or cell phones? They are pretty cute ads, with young kids saying how clear the calls are and how it’s like being back in the 1800′s or something… “you know, connected to the land“. The funny part is that yes, it is exactly like being back in the 1800′s – you are paying way more for an outdated technology than you would for modern, up to date technology!

How To Make Sure You Get Free Money For Your Child’s Education.

Kiplingers, one of my favorite personal finance sites & magazine, has a great article up for parents with advice on making sure you can get the free money you might be entitled to for your child’s education. Ask M-Network: Move Retirement Account Or Stay Where I Am?

My Two Dollars reader Bud sent in the following question to the M-Network’s new feature “Ask The M-Network“:

I just turned 57 today. I retired from a company 2 years ago. I took a lump sum and gave it to Fidelity in a managed account. Needless to say I am down 30+%. My question is or should I say I’m looking for direction whether I should remove it out of the managed account to save the cost of paying Fidelity to manage it and just invested in Fidelity or Vanguard index funds. I would at least be saving the quarterly expense.

California To Delay Tax Refunds Due To Budget Crunch.

Although I don’t live in California or ever get a refund anymore, I would not be too thrilled with this:

California’s budget meltdown is about to hit home for millions of taxpayers awaiting their refunds and people who depend on the social safety net to survive, a top state finance official warned Friday. Controller John Chiang, who is responsible for managing the state’s cash flow, plans to delay $3.7 billion in payments starting next month in response to lawmakers’ failure to fix a projected $40 billion deficit through mid-2010. Among those who won’t get paid on time: taxpayers who file their returns early and are awaiting refunds; families who depend on welfare and aid for the aged, blind and disabled; and programs that serve developmentally disabled and mentally ill patients.

Sunday Money Roundup – Weekend To Myself Edition.

This weekend my wife went to Los Angeles to visit some friends for a few days so I am left here to do as I please. I am sure I will be out in the garage most of the time finishing a woodworking project I started a while ago, so that should keep me out of trouble. While I vacuum up all this sawdust, check out these articles that caught my eye this week:

Money Ning wants to know if you would take a pay cut to save your job? I think I would, but I work for myself so I don’t even have the option – I just gave myself a pay cut!
