I love bartering. I do a lot of rebates, and use these items to barter with. I have had some limited success finding barter partners on Craigslist. I’m not giving up on it, because I think it’s a really worthwhile thing to do.

You could always barter services – lawn, home repair, decorations, etc..

Very interesting! I think it’s great that this is happening, would like to see more of it…. but not sure it would help for low-incomers much if they don’t already have much to “barter” with…. if you live in an apartment you may not even be able to grow any veggies to sell, etc.

I think this is a fantastic trend. My wife teaches music and would barter services with some of her students who had trouble affording the lessons. It’s a win-win for everyone. It can also lead to lasting friendships. She is very close still to some of her students. Of course, it depends on what you do. If you’re selling insurance it might be a tough go but if you ofter another kind of service people are pretty keen to barter with you.

I love bartering. Been working on this with people I know for years. Last year I traded veggie seeds with a co-worker only to find out that I don’t like Swiss Chard, but it didn’t cost me anything. I worked out some deals for other people for appliances, some fencing and other odds and ends. Traded some veggies for homemade salsa. Thats all I can think of right now.. But I can tell you bartering is fun!

Doing more bartering was one of my goals for 2009. Dollar-wise I haven’t done an incredible amount of bartering, but it’s a steady trickle, and it’s very satisfying to me. Mostly I barter homemade breads with farmers for their dairy and meats. With summer coming on, I won’t be baking so much. But I’ll pick it back up in the fall.
