Sunday Money Roundup – Amex Gold Card Points Edition.

I have written before about how I have used points from various cards and programs (like MyPoints, which I love) to get free merchandise and trips, but I am finally ready to trade in my American Express Gold Business Card points on something worthwhile. I haven’t decided on exactly what, as I am deciding between an LCD TV for my office/second living room or a Bose 3-2-1 home stereo system that could replace my 14 year old receiver and speakers. Decisions, decisions – but not a bad choice to have to make! On to the roundup…

Money Quote Friday – Poverty Of Ambition Edition.

“Focusing your life solely on making a buck shows a poverty of ambition. It asks too little of yourself. And it will leave you unfulfilled.” – Barack Obama

Have a great weekend everyone.

Interactive Map of Bailout Recipients.

Not really sure what purpose it can serve, but it is interesting to see who/where/what is receiving bailout funds around the country. Each marker represents the headquarters of a financial institution that expects or has already received money from the Treasury Department under the TARP (Troubled Asset Relief Program). The size of each marker represents the amount of bailout money given to each institution. Click on the markers to see the institution’s name and amount it’s receiving. Check it out here.

One Of The Best Ways To Spend $79.95.

No one thinks it will happen to them – a complete computer crash. In fact, knock on wood, it has never happened to me…yet. But someday, it probably will. Years ago I started backing up my computers once a week, so if it did happen the most I could lose would be a single week’s worth of data. In the grand scheme of things, that wouldn’t be so bad. However, my mom had not been backing up her computer for the last 2 years…and it died on her. Everything she had on there, from family pictures to stories she was writing, were lost forever. She took it somewhere to see if they could recover anything, but it was a total loss. And it could have all been saved if she had only followed my instructions to back her stuff up often! There really isn’t any excuse anymore to not back up your computer, as external hard drives were way more expensive a few years ago but now a tiny, portable 320 GB drive is only about $79.95. 320 GB should be large enough for 99% of people, as it’s plenty for me and I have hours of video footage stored on my computer, which take up a ton of space.
