Absolutely! And good point about "asking" for discounts - it never hurts!

I think this brings up a great point when it comes to just about anything regarding spending money--"It never hurts to ask". With the state of the economy, these people are probably dying to rent apartments.

On a side note, did you know that a lot of major retailers will actually bargain on prices of higher end items? I have gotten things like vacuum cleaners and flat screen TVs for less than the price tag, just because I asked.

Paul - I guess hypothetically you should be able to, as that is a ton of money. I paid more than $2000 a month for my apt in CA and I made less than $80K that year, so it can be done. But it is all about location, location, location :)

Yeah,
I hate to open up an endless debate, but I've seen some PF sites say that you should be able to survive on less than $100,000 no matter where you live. OK, maybe that's true, but housing is expensive. The mortgage for my 1400sqft townhouse is more than $2000/month (bought at the peak of the frenzy, but I never said I could time the market), and believe me, that's a very modest house in my area.

You really can't ignore cost-of-living differences when looking at housing.

That's a reason why I think the income limits for things like Roth contributions are a bit unfair.

It depends on where you live. I have never, ever paid less than $975 for anywhere I have lived in the last 12 years. It has nothing to do with a "money blog" - it has to do with A. where you live and B. how much you make and can afford.

Oh, and I forgot to mention. I have gas heat at the apartment... and I don't have to pay for it! My energy bill goes down to about $20-30/mo in the winter time.

Holy Crap! $1300/mo for rent? I pay around $600 where I am and live in one of the best complexes in the city. I have a 2bdrm, 1 bath, 940sqft apt, with a free gym membership.

I couldn't imagine paying that much for rent. That would be like just shredding $700/mo.

I hope the reason you are moving to this particular location is a good one. It doesn't make a whole lot of sense on a money blog otherwise.

I do not really have any specials I could have asked for. Utilities and parking are included so that was enough for me, but our rent did not get bumped up this year.
