This is great advice David.
When our cashflows are inconsistent we can take adhoc anmounts form the business and wonder why we feel under pressure all the time personally. Using your method (which I also do myself) you learn to live on a regular amount of money and can at least keep your personal life in order.

This is a very relevant post. I am self employed and I know that it can be very tricky to do a financial plan when your income isn't steady.

There is no magic formula, but you have offered some good advice.

I have only one bank account, and intend to keep it this way. I track my expenses, investments and earnings through excel spreadsheet.

I deposit my business income into a business savings account. I just changed my business entity, so I out myself and my wife on a salary which I pay out of my business account. I charge all business expenses to my Discover Business card, which I pay in full each month. Thankfully my expenses are minimum. :)

I have a business account that all of my self-employed income goes into initially. Then I move it to a checking account for bills (this includes the automatic withdrawal for the retirement account), and into a savings account for emergencies. Since I have an LLC, moving the money from business checking into personal checking is essential to keep things separated. I always leave enough in the business account to pay for business expenses, though.
