Soccer teams can buy a player from another team for a transfer fee. This usually includes a percentage of the fee going to the player if they agree to it. The player's agent also gets a commission. The buying & selling of players is another aspect of the system that can contribute greatly to a clubs bottom line. Manchester United for example only made a profit this fiscal year because they sold Cristiano Ronaldo.

@Evan: The major sports in the US don’t have a similar mechanism to compare against. Both Manchester United and Liverpool were profitable, successful concerns before Malcom Glazer did this to Man U, and George Gillett & Tom Hicks pulled this trick on Liverpool. Blaming it just on the club is only half the story.

The article is generally accurate, but fails to mention that those ‘rich’ owners often buy the clubs on borrowed money through a ‘front’ organization, then once acquired, transfer the debt to the club itself. I don't think I have ever heard of that term used in here in the US.

Can you explain a little bit about selling a player?
