@Evan: The major sports in the US don’t have a similar mechanism to compare against. Soccer teams can buy a player from another team for a transfer fee. This usually includes a percentage of the fee going to the player if they agree to it. The player’s agent also gets a commission. The buying & selling of players is another aspect of the system that can contribute greatly to a clubs bottom line. Manchester United for example only made a profit this fiscal year because they sold Cristiano Ronaldo.

The article is generally accurate, but fails to mention that those ‘rich’ owners often buy the clubs on borrowed money through a ‘front’ organization, then once acquired, transfer the debt to the club itself. Both Manchester United and Liverpool were profitable, successful concerns before Malcom Glazer did this to Man U, and George Gillett & Tom Hicks pulled this trick on Liverpool. Blaming it just on the club is only half the story.

Can you explain a little bit about selling a player? I don’t really get that part. I don’t think I have ever heard of that term used in here in the US.
