I never realized how expensive it was until I would go to other places, like Mississippi, Las Vegas, Texas and Louisiana. Coming back home was definite sticker shock. Now that I'm living in the "real world" I see it even more. The lowest gas I've seen in the past week is $3.27 for unleaded. We just moved from a 1 bedroom 700 sq ft apartment for $1172/month. It's ridiculous, but the funny thing is, I can't see myself living anywhere else. I’ve lived in southern California all my life. Recently, I've started reconsidering goals that my parents wanted me to achieve -- stable job, good income, house in the suburbs -- and asking what I really want out of my life instead. I think I would love living simply on less money, with more time and space. I'm looking forward to trying out your cost of living calculator as I try to figure out my next step.
