How Would You Spot A Counterfeit Bill?

We had a $10 dollar bill the other day show up at home that felt kind of weird to us, so I went looking for some information on how to tell a counterfeit bill from a real one.

It’s pretty amazing, really, the differences between “money” paper and “regular” paper. It turns out that paper used to make money is from linen and cotton fibers and is called rag paper. Regular old paper is made from cellulose, which degrades over time unlike rag paper. Also, the paper they use for money is compressed beyond belief, thus why it is so thin and strong.

Rant: Dying Woman Can Be Prosecuted On Marijuana Charges.

I am sorry that this is not really personal finance related, but it is kind of “personal” related as it one day could affect any and/or all of us. If your best friend or a family member was filing a fraudulent tax return, would you turn them in? I mean, if they are not paying their fair share, that means everyone else is eventually going to have to cover it for them…so should you turn them in? The IRS is trying to convince you that you should indeed turn anyone in that you know is cheating on your taxes with cold, hard cash. If the amount owed is $2 million or more, (including fees, penalties, the actual tax owed), you can get a 15-30% fee. Is it worth turning in your rich grandmother?

We all know that the government tends to spend a lot of our tax dollars unwisely, but just HOW bad is it? The people over at Citizens Against Government Waste have just released their 2007 PIG Book, which is an annual compilation of the pork-barrel projects in the federal budget. This years book has 2,658 pork projects in the Defense and Homeland Security Appropriations Acts, at a cost of $13.2 billion…to your wallet!

Some interesting “projects” from this years book include:

$4,500,000 for chitosan bandage component which utilizes natural compounds found in shrimp heads
