I Am Not A Consumer; I Am A Person.

Can I just tell you that I hate when pundits call me a consumer? Last time I checked I was not a consumer but rather a person who happens to buy things once in a while. My sole purpose in life is not to buy enough stuff to prop up failing companies or line the pockets of some corporate big-whig. I buy what I need, when I need it, and then I work to save the rest of my money. But for some reason, the news likes to peg me as a consumer and run stories about “consumer confidence” – my supposed confidence in spending enough money to keep the economy going. However, that’s not what I was put on earth to do and I have worked pretty hard to escape that kind of mentality that seems to be the norm. I get up in the morning, I work for a living, and I buy the things necessary to my life – that does not make me a consumer but rather a human contributor to society. So please stop trying to make me responsible because I don’t buy enough stuff…

What Would You Do If Your Power Went Out For 3 Weeks?

Back in December, residents of a few Massachusetts towns went without electricity for weeks because of an ice storm and the ineptitude of a local electric company. I would venture to guess that most of these people were not prepared in the least, seeing as how the majority of people never think about long term needs in case of a disruption of everyday life. Are you prepared for an event like that? So many things stop working that you think you can depend on when things are not as they usually are:

Finding Contentment While Others Around You Want More.

You know how it goes – many people are out looking to make themselves happy by buying things. Do you really want to be one of them? Happiness comes in all forms; the most reliable version is the kind that you comes from yourself, not from a “thing”. But all too often (myself included, don’t get me wrong) we fall into the trap of thinking that if we buy something, we will be…happier, smarter, better-looking, etc. Too bad it will never last for any length of time!

Top 10 Reasons Why You Do Not Need A Savings Account…

10. Mattresses are more comfortable with a stack of ones underneath them. Have you ever slept on a mattress with no money under it? Ugh. How uncomfortable!

9. I do not ever want to retire. Ever. Working gives me time away from my wife, ya know? Besides, I enjoy being hunched over at work at 94 because I refused to save any money.
