I have seen lots of different advice on whether or not couples should combine their finances when they get married. Some say you should combine everything right away, and other say you should keep things separate, if only so you each have spending money. So after seeing all these, I wanted to share what we did when we got married in 2005.
We combined everything within a month of getting married.
Sorry for the lack of posts the last few days, things have been hectic with my “real” job and have not allowed me a ton of time for writing. But that is about to change, as this week I have new stuff coming up about how to afford the things you need, a discussion about how my wife and I combined our finances and made it work, what I have learned after 7 months of working from home, and more info on our land versus house decision. My wife and I got this book when we got married in 2005…I guess because people thought we were Young Fabulous and Broke. Anyways, I would like to pass it along to a reader that could really use it. To be honest, some of Suze Orman’s information grinds me the wrong way, but there is still a lot of great information in this book for anyone looking for help with saving, debt reduction, buying a home, etc. And if you win the book, it’s free, so what do you have to lose?
The 12th personal finance site in my series “Favorite Blog Wednesday” is Zen Habits, written by my friend Leo. Leo started blogging not that long ago, but already has tens of thousands of visitors a day along with over 4,000 RSS subscribers. That’s quite an accomplishment in such a short amount of time!

Ahhh decisions, decisions. Here we are, 2 weeks after getting back from our vacation, pondering quite deeply a move to Taos, New Mexico. We cannot seem to get it out of our heads! The scenery is beautiful, the air is clean, the people are great, and the real estate is reasonable. Oh, and there is no traffic. Although we cannot do anything until at least this summer, my wife and I are discussing how we could make this work for us financially, whether we should buy the tract of land that we really want right now and build eventually or if we should wait till we are ready to move and then buy a house that is already built. It’s a tough call.
