I Don’t Want A Gift, But Thank You.

Today is my 37th birthday, and I hope I don’t get anything. Well, cash is alright, as are gift cards to stores I normally go to, but other than that? I don’t need nor want for anything else. No plastic doodads, no new mugs, no wall hangings. I am all set with that stuff, thanks. I have lived on my own for 15 years since college, and my house is pretty well stocked with all the things I need. If there was anything I was missing, such as a dish with a funny picture on it, I would buy it myself. Now that we have that out of the way, let me extrapolate a little on why I am writing this post.

Taking The Cheap Way Out On Medical Issues Costs More Later.

My wife has been going to the dentist a lot this year. The reason? She has a bunch of faulty fillings from years ago that have gone bad and required a lot of work to fix. While we have dental insurance, it only covers a percentage of any work done (other than cleanings) so we have had to pay a pretty penny out of pocket for the work. Really it’s being paid for a second time, as my wife already paid for this work years ago at one of those dental clinics that are a lot cheaper than a regular dentist. In her effort to save money that she didn’t have, she paid a really bad clinic to do really bad dental work. Turns out it doesn’t save much in the long run if you have to pay even more later to fix what they did!

Finding Salvaged Goods To Save Money On Remodeling Your Home.

Why pay new in-store prices for something that you can get at a fraction of the cost at a salvage store? Remodeling your house can cost a fortune if you are not careful with your budget, and in addition to the tips I mentioned a while ago about frugal redecorating, one place you should definitely check out for some of the bigger ticket items is a local salvage store. When other houses get remodeled or torn down, many times the deconstruction company takes the goods that are still in good shape to salvage companies, who then resell them back to the general public at a very reduced rate. Things like sinks, windows, light fixtures, cabinets, doors, and toilets often end up just waiting for reuse in someone else’s house. Not only do these types of places keep this stuff out of the landfill, but it also saves you money in the process of your remodel – something anyone who done this kind of work can vouch is very important!

Drastically Reduce Your Expenses Starting Today.

We all need to save money, and in my opinion there is no easier place to start than in areas that we are already spending more than we should. It’s also easier to cut expenses immediately than it is to make more money, especially in this economy. Over the last year since we moved here (which saved us a ton right away), I have really worked on cutting expenses in our house for two reasons – 1. I don’t like spending more than I have to and 2. cutting expenses means I can work a little less because I don’t need to bring in as much money each month. Because of the way the economy is, I figured I would share some of the ways that we have really cut down our expenses and hopefully inspire you to make some of the changes yourself.

To The Rescue Again: The Importance Of An Emergency Fund.

Once again, and emergency fund helps someone through 4 months of unemployment. If you have been putting off adding to your fund, let this story be a lesson to you – back in July of 2007 my brother was laid off, and I wrote about how important his emergency fund was in helping him weather unemployment. Because he had a sizable amount of money set aside, he made it through a few months with no problems. Fast forward a year and a half, and my brother was laid off again in January – and just yesterday accepted a new position with another firm. So he had to provide for himself for another 4.5 months, and thankfully he had built up his emergency fund yet again. He was still able to pay his mortgage, his car loan, his monthly bills, and put food on his plate, even without working for that long. He didn’t need to charge up credit card debt or take out any loans because he planned in advance…something too many of us don’t do enough of.
