Shopping small versus big- Mom and Pop vs. Big Box Stores

In the town that I grew up in, we really only had Mom and Pop type stores; they were mostly all locally owned (even the banks) and we did not have any “big box” stores to speak of other than a single K-Mart. So whenever we needed something, be it from the hardware store, the dry cleaners, an electronic part or gas for the car, we always headed down to “Jim’s Gas Station” or “Bob’s Hardware”. Now that I am, ahem, older and live in a major metropolitan nightmare of a place, everywhere I am able to shop tends to be big box stores (except Wal-mart, I don’t step inside there on principal alone).

Two of my favorite personal finance posts from the past 2 weeks.

Each and every week I am amazed at the amount of personal finance posts that people come up with, so its hard to pick a few that really stand out for me. This past week, even though I was traveling quite a bit, I came across 2 posts that I really enjoyed and wanted to share with other readers.

Overpriced Crap o’ The Day – A Pen for $3,360.

Yep. A pen. You know, the ones that write. With ink and stuff. They do the same thing that pens you find on the street or in your office do, except these pens cost $3,360. Each. Not for a pack of 10,000, but each. If you seriously have enough money to start buying $3,360 pens, then either A. Call me and let’s chat or B. You are insane.

The Best Shopping Deals After Christmas

So now that Christmas is over, you might have gotten a few gift cards or some cash gifts that you are looking to spend. Before you do that though, make sure you put some of that cash away for the future! I always tell people that they should use some gift money to buy themselves something they want, but they should also put a little bit of it away. If there was something you wanted for Christmas that you didn’t get or there is something you have wanted to buy for a while but didn’t have the cash, you might want to check out this list from Smart Money:

Ann Taylor Save up to 40% on all cashmere, and up to 60% on other select items.

How to save money during the days AFTER Christmas and the holidays.

Ok, so the holidays are going to be over soon..and whether you like that or not, it’s going to happen and life will return to normal. But before it all settles down, how can you best spend some of your after-holiday dough? (that is, if you have any left!) By buying everything for the NEXT holiday season. I was in a big store today and saw some of their Christmas things were on sale already before the holiday is even over, so I know that in the days after the holidays, everything will be on sale at huge discounts. I mean, who needs Christmas lights in months January-October? So your best bet is to go to the stores like Target, grocery stores, drug stores and hardware stores in the days right after Christmas. What can you get at 50-80% off retail price (at least!) now so you don’t have to buy them next year?
