Stop Watching Commercials On Television.

I no longer watch any television, if I can help it, in real time. LOST may be on at 8pm, but I rarely start watching it until about 8:20 or so. The reason? So I can skip every single commercial. I have my DVR remote programmed to skip 30 seconds ahead every time I hit a certain button, so I just skip right on over every commercial. It’s quite a thrilling feeling knowing that I am avoiding the brainwashing and consumerism that commercials try to get you with. Part of the reason so many feel like that don’t have or aren’t doing “enough” is because of mass media, as we are fed constant images of new cars, McMansions, perfect white teeth, perfectly toned bodies, the latest and greatest gadgets and shiny, happy people – most of which doesn’t exist like that in the real world. But the marketing people are very good at their jobs; they know exactly how to feed into our feelings of inadequacy and make us think that we are not good enough. Thankfully, someone invented the DVR and we can escape all that marketing nonsense. None of us needs to be told that are are not perfect; we already know that (I hope). But buying new stuff to try to make us like the happy people on TV isn’t going to make us perfect! And living where I live helps too, as no one cares here what car I drive, what clothes I wear, or where I do my shopping/eating. It’s kind of like the anti-commercial.

What Your Grocery Store May Not Be Telling You.

Over at Smart Money, there is a pretty good article covering 10 things that your grocery store may not be letting you in on in these tough times. While I am sure some of these are true, we shop at a locally owned natural grocer who, in a small town like this, would be shuttered pretty quickly if they tried to pull one over on customers. That being said, check out 5 I picked out from the list and see what your grocery store might not be telling you:

Black Friday Crowds Kill Walmart Worker.

This is a good example of how the consuming habits of Americans have become a sick disease – someone actually DIED because these shoppers were so eager to get into Walmart and get a deal on some cheap plastic.

A Wal-Mart worker died after being trampled when hundreds of shoppers smashed through the doors of a Long Island store Friday morning, police and witnesses said. The 34-year-old employee, a temporary maintenance worker, tried to hold back the unruly crowds just after the Valley Stream store opened at 5 a.m. Witnesses said the surging throngs of shoppers knocked the man down. He fell and was stepped on. As he gasped for air, shoppers ran over and around him.

DirecTV Customer Service Sucks.

As some of you may recall, a few weeks ago I wrote about how DirecTV pulled a bait and switch on the service at my house. After about 45 minutes on the phone with customer service I finally gave up trying to plead my case which was that the offer I had signed up for was for $41.99 for 12 months but that I was being charged $67.99 for 12 months”¦and they said I never got an offer for $41.99, so too bad for me. Nice job, DirecTV, way to care about your paying customers. Oh how I longed for the days of cable TV at that point, which I had had zero problems with since the beginning of time. But I digress. So what’s the issue with DirecTV customer service now? I am going on my third receiver that has not worked correctly in only two months that I have had their service, I have not had TV in 7 days because of it, they still don’t seem to care that a brand new customer is having any problems, and they were so kind to offer a whole $10 credit. Yippee! Ah shucks DirecTV, you are too kind.

MyPoints Balance Continues To Climb; What Shall I Redeem Them For?

Back in April, I wrote about MyPoints and how my account balance was high enough that I felt comfortable spending the points on something good. I ended up getting a $100 Barnes & Noble gift card, which isn’t bad for not doing much work! And now, in a very short 5 months, my balance is back up to over 17,000 points – meaning I have over $125 worth of points to redeem. From checking out the site last night, here are some of my options for spending my accumulated points:
