Create A Shopping List To Stop You From Buying Anything.

notebook.jpg

It may sound counter-intuitive, but one of the best ways I have seen to prevent you from buying stuff you don’t need is to keep a list of things you think you need and to review it every 30 days. Why does this work? Because chances are that whatever you think you need, you actually don’t – you just want it. And by creating a list of things you see that you want, it gives you time to cool off, step away, and to really contemplate what you are spending your money on.

Finance Magazine Encouraging People To Stock Up On Dangerous Toys.

In what I view as one of the most irresponsible things I have read in a long time in a personal finance magazine, this month’s Kiplinger’s magazine has an article encouraging parents to actually stock up on toys this year because next year they might be more expensive due to tougher safety regulations. Huh? So I should go out and stock up this year on potentially lethal toys to give to my kids next year instead of waiting for the tougher rules to take place? Just to save a few dollars? Glad you are aren’t my parent!

An Open Letter To Major League Baseball, Fox And Advertisers.

I just wanted to let you all know that because of the incessant advertising throughout the World Series, you actually encouraged me to watch the games much faster than their broadcast time. How? I own a Tivo.

This is the first year I have watched the World Series where there are more ads than baseball action and I am tired of it. I can accept the ads on the Green Monster at Fenway and the superimposed ones behind the batter on the wall. I can sort of deal with the ads between innings and I understand why they are on. But every 2 minutes or so, when the play by play guys even start reading ads and promoting a Hybrid Tahoe (are you joking?), that is the last straw for me.

Companies – Please Train Your Customer Service Reps. Please.

I have had it with customer service at major organizations. Seriously. OK not with all companies, but most every time I need help from a customer service representative, I get treated like crap – like I am a bother to them. I realize the customer is becoming an afterthought; but still…would it kill you to be pleasant and get something done for a customer? If I ever treated one of my clients like these companies have treated me, I would no longer have a business. Unfortunately, these companies can do whatever they want – and continue to be in business, no worse for the wear. The four most recent dealings I had with customer service are as follows, and it seems that it only gets worse.
