Holiday Travel – Cross Country By Amtrak With Pictures.

timetable.jpg

You want it, you got it…after mentioning that my wife and I were taking the train across the country over the holidays, I got a bunch of emails asking for a review and/or pictures of the trip so I figured I would put something up. (Some of you might have seen most of this on my other site, so I apologize if you are one of them – but thanks for reading both sites!) The image to the left is one of the pamphlets that are throughout the train, and it is the timetable for all the stops between Los Angeles and Chicago. I love the design of it – it looks like it is straight out of the old days, so it is quite fitting for a train ride. When I told a friend we were taking the train to Chicago, he said “You know, they make these flying machines now, it’s not 1889 anymore”…and although he was half joking, he was also half serious. You get a lot of these type of responses when you tell someone you are taking the train over 2,000 miles! The trip to Chicago took 39 hours and the trip back to Los Angeles took 41 hours. It was supposed to take 42 hours, but Amtrak got in an hour early, which I guess they never do. When was the last time a flight got in an hour early?

On The Road Again – No Posts Till New Years Day.

Just to let everyone know, this will be the last post until New Years Day, as we are getting back on the train today to head back to Los Angeles. I have had incredibly limited internet access while I was away, and even this post is being typed on my phone. So please bear with me as I take the trip back home again and try to get back on schedule. And I hope you all have a wonderful New Years!

Leavin’ For Chicago On The Train Today.

Well, we are off today on our grand adventure. And as long as we don’t get stuck in the Rockies somewhere in a snow storm, some robbers don’t show up on horseback and rob us, and the train doesn’t run out of gas, we should make it to Chicago in 39 hours.

39 hours. On a train.

Places You Can Still Stretch Your Dollar While Traveling Internationally.

With the decline of the U.S. dollar against virtually every major countries currency, you might be hesitant to take a trip to London anytime soon. After all, you will be paying about 2 dollars of your money for every dollar worth of goods/services over there and that can make for a very expensive trip. However, in Sunday’s LA Times there was an article in the travel section showcasing places where the U.S. dollar still has a lot of value against the local currency – if you care to visit some of the less popular tourist places on earth. So where did they tell us to go?

You Think You Have Money Problems? Try Visiting Mexico…

We just got back from our week long vacation/wedding attendance in Ixtapa, Mexico and we are trying to get back into the swing of things after taking the week off. While we had an incredible time, the poverty that we saw on the roads to and from the airport and into town really struck me as extreme. I feel kind of guilty about the fact that I flew in, spent a lot of money in a resort town, and flew out…without helping out much of the local economy. Sure, we all see images of poor neighborhoods in this country, but in Mexico the poor areas are way more downtrodden than any neighborhood in this country could probably be. If there is one thing that this vacation taught me, it is that there are so many people worse off than either I or anyone I know could ever be and that I really have nothing to complain about.
