Taking The Train From Los Angeles To Chicago For Christmas.

amtrak.jpg

Well well well….after much discussion, my wife and I decided to bite the bullet and buy train tickets to Chicago for Christmas. After looking for weeks and weeks for reasonably priced airfare for the dates we wanted, we started talking about taking the train and turning our trip into an adventure. With some debates about the 40 hours on the train each way, we bought the tickets yesterday and there is no going back now! Figuring that we would be having children soon, we decided this would be a pretty cool adventure for the two of us to take by ourselves. Sure, it cost a little more than the expensive plane tickets would have, but we get our own bedroom on the train! Our food and drinks is included in the price, we get the newspaper delivered each morning to our room along with bottled water and coffee, and we even get turn down service after dinner. I have never even had turn down service at a hotel – never mind on a train. Add in the fact that we will be contributing way less pollution into the environment by traveling by rail instead of flying, and we are really excited about this experience.

How Packaging A Vacation Can Save You A Ton Of Money.

I recently wrote about how we booked our trip to Mexico through Expedia, and they offered me the option to pay in two installments; one when I booked and 1 in a month. That was certainly a selling point, but also by booking our entire package through them instead of buying everything separate, we saved a healthy hunk of change. Just how much?

By booking the entire package through Expedia, we are paying $1,450 for the entire trip. That includes airfare for 2, transportation in Mexico to the hotel, and the all-inclusive hotel from Wednesday – Sunday. This includes taxes and tips, so it is quite a deal.

Book A Trip Through Expedia, Only Pay Half?

Last night we booked our trip to Ixtapa, Mexico for our friends’ wedding. Since we were flying all the way there, we decided to go a few days early and take a vacation at the same time. Two birds, one stone! Anyway, after comparing the airfare and hotel packages at every travel site on the internet, Expedia turned out to be the cheapest. After picking our dates, entering my CC info and hitting “checkout”, we were offered the chance to split our payment into two…effectively billing us 1/2 of the trip today, and 1/2 in one month. No finance charges and no fees, just half and half. I’ll take it.

Many Thanks To Guest Posters – Back In Action Today.

We are back and have survived our trip to the east coast for a few days. Many thanks to Paid Twice and Brip Blap, both of which provided excellent guest posts while I was away. Thanks to the readers for sticking around…as soon as I get settled things should return to normal!

Seems Rewards Cards Do Have Their Benefits After All.

Well, the time finally came for me to start using some of the mileage rewards on American Airlines that I have acquired over the years. They had been building up for years and I was saving them for when airline prices were out of control and/or I needed a last minute ticket, and in just the past 2 weeks I have “bought” five round trip tickets on American using only miles and $25.
